FLAVORS OF OAXACA

“Hola! What would you like today?” is what you will hear when you walk up to this cozy family-owned business. Situated in front of the famous Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu, is Aloha Tortilla Factory. The owners of this establishment are Fermin and Lourdes. They are a married couple from Oaxaca, Mexico. They raised their three children there and soon moved to the United States. They didn’t want their children to miss flavors from home, so they decided to open a small kiosk. Good Mexican food is hard to find on Oahu, so finding this place was great!

I’m a junior at Hawaii Pacific University, and for those who don’t know, a part of HPU’s home is at Aloha Tower Marketplace. When my family and I arrived two years ago for my freshman year, we were greeted by Lourdes. She was incredibly sweet and gave off a homey vibe, which certainly eased my mom’s nerves. Aloha Tortilla is a student favorite on campus. Everything is made to order and under $12. It is a kiosk, so it is outside with some tables behind it. There are also some tables in the atrium of Aloha Tower Marketplace if there isn’t seating available.

Aloha Tortilla offers a range of dishes like quesadillas, tacos, tortas, molletes, nachos, and more. My go-to meal is their carne asada quesadilla. For $8.50, you get two quesadillas with a side salad and a dessert. The dessert is often a brownie or cupcake. For an extra charge, you can get cilantro/and or avocado on it. They are stuffed to the brim with ingredients. I often find myself only eating one and eating the other later. What I love about their food is that unlike a lot of Mexican restaurants, their food isn’t greasy or messy. It fills you up but doesn’t weigh you down. This is the perfect place to get food if you’re going to the beach or need a good meal on the way home from work. I often stop by after classes and it always fills me up until dinner. Another popular item is their tacos. If you order three tacos, it’s a similar setup. Even during holidays, they will have themed desserts like Halloween cupcakes or Valentine’s Day brownies. Every now and then, they’ll bake traditional Mexican goodies like conchas. Conchas are a sweet Mexican bread with a sugar coating on top.

I always recommend this spot to tourists, locals, and students. The service will remind you of being back home at your parent’s house. Even though it is a kiosk, don’t expect your food to come out right away since every order is made to order(and with love). If you haven’t been, go up to Aloha Tower for a great view of the water/city! It’s free for everyone, and it’s right next door. They also validate your parking, which is a big plus for anyone that drives. Stop by and have a nice chat with owners while munching on your yummy food.
